“On the kitchen pan, oil hissed with loud crackles, spreading the smell of fried eggs and sausages throughout the apartment. The mind, having smelled food, issued a clear command to wake up, but the slack, relaxed body under the warm blanket didn’t respond to the provocation. Outside it had long been light, and sunlight that had entered the room painfully cut through his eyelids. Sasha tried to lift his lids, but a sharp pain in his temples made him change his mind. Pulling his head into his shoulders, he covered himself with the blanket, trying to hide from reality and the light. The clicking of claws on the laminate was quickly getting closer, and at one moment someone pushed a wet, drooling muzzle under the warm cover, searching for his feet—then, once they were found, licking them a couple of times.”
