The real name of the author hiding behind the pseudonym “Kurban Said” is still a matter of dispute. His famous novel “Ali and Nino” was first published in 1937 in Vienna. For a long time the book was considered lost, and only in the 1970s was its English translation discovered. The book’s characters triumphantly returned to bookstore shelves to become one of the most famous couples of the 20th century. Today the novel has been translated into thirty-three languages; plays are staged based on it, films are made, and in Baku a monument was erected to its heroes.
On the eve of the Russian Revolution of 1917, the ardent Muslim Ali and the beautiful Christian Nino fell in love. They could hardly hope their fates would be joined, because such a union is forbidden by religion and custom. Thanks to a friend who urged their families to agree to this marriage, their passionate dream finally has a chance to come true…
The novel is published in a new translation.
