Washington Irving—the "father of American literature"—spent several years (1826–29) in Spain studying manuscripts and books related to the era of the discovery of America. Late in his “Spanish” period, he became fascinated with the study of Arab-Spanish history and the Reconquista, and spent the summer of 1829 in Granada, in the Moorish palace of the Alhambra. We owe the appearance of the book "Tales of the Alhambra" to that.
It was published in 1832—the year he returned home, where he came back already famous as a writer and a national hero.
