At the heart of the plot is a conflict between neighboring landed gentry and the romantic feeling that flares up between their “accidentally” met children—despite the ridiculous feud of their parents. Nearly Shakespearean passions lead to an unexpected reconciliation between the landlords and an agreement about their children’s marriage—Lisa and Alexei. But, as if by spite, at the moment when happiness seems so close, new obstacles appear because of Lisa’s antics, with which she tries to hide her deception. After all, it was she—disguised as a peasant girl—who arranged the meeting with Alexei in the forest, where their acquaintance took place. And now she is forced again to stage a performance with disguises!
