According to a well-known legend, Ahasfer (Latin: Ahasverus), a Jewish craftsman whose house Jesus Christ passed on the way to His crucifixion while carrying His Cross, refused the Savior and pushed Him away when He asked permission to lean against the wall of his house to rest—and for this, he was sentenced to wander the earth until the Second Coming of Christ, and to endure eternal contempt from people. In Eugène Sue’s novel (1804–1857), Ahasfer appears as a mysterious benefactor who has gone through an immense journey to understand that, by refusing help to the weak, a person condemns not only himself to eternal torment, but also his entire line.
