Who ordered David Berkowitz to kill? A black Labrador—or someone else? Did he act alone? The son of Sam—or the Sons of Sam? On August 10, 1977, New York police arrested David Berkowitz, the “Son of Sam” Killer known for using a .44 caliber. Berkowitz admitted he shot fifteen people and killed six. During interrogation, he made a shocking statement—he said he was ordered to kill by a demonic dog. The case was officially closed. Journalist Maury Terry suspected Berkowitz’s confession. Inspired by contradictory witness testimony and evidence overlooked during the investigation, Terry became convinced that the Son of Sam wasn’t acting alone. For ten years, he carefully collected evidence and published his findings in the first edition of “Absolute Evil” in 1987. Terry suggested that the Son of Sam’s attacks were organized by a cult in Yonkers, which might have been connected to the Church of the Process of the Final Judgment—and responsible for other ritual murders across the country. The Process Church had previously also been linked to Charles Manson and his “Family” cult.
