The life of Cossack Platon Panteleev was shattered in 1918: two of his sons found themselves on different sides of the Revolution. Vasily believed in the new world order, while Pyotr went with the retreating White Army. Worn out by brotherly hatred and stubborn, uncompromising resolve, Platon—caught in a surge of rage—breaks the family shrine, an icon-folding case with the Savior and the Mother of God, and gives his sons half each.

A hundred years later, a Moscow student nicknamed Flint arrives in the village of Voznesenskoye to unravel the history of his family, long since overgrown with myths. China and South Africa, Argentina and America—his ancestors had lived in the farthest corners of the world, his father said. Only now it is no longer possible to ask where in these stories invention ends and where truth begins.

Flint—more precisely, Platon Panteleev—has not yet realized that it is here, in the old village, that fate is about to bring together again the family image and the two branches of a once-severed family, of which he is a part.
