Description
In Russia’s history, there are several fateful turning points.

March–April 1881—marked by the death of Alexander II and the accession of Alexander III to the throne—is one of them.

Reconstructing this key moment in our national history matters to us, so we can understand why we ended up where we ended up. We aren’t interested in the venerable Russian genre “Who is to blame?” Nobody is to blame—everyone wanted what was best. What interests us is the question “Who is right?”—then and, most importantly, today. Once we find the answer, we can finally ask the next, decisive question: “What should we do?”

Boris Akunin’s drama “1881” is plot-connected with the novel “The Road to Kitezh,” part of the project “The History of the Russian State.” The play is published with the author’s comments for the director.
