Description
Margaret, an American of Korean descent, travels to her ancestors’ homeland to find out who her grandfather Lee Chholha was: a mysterious criminal whose name the family preferred not to speak—even in a whisper. Her search, stretching over many years, leads her to encounters with all kinds of people—professors, clever businessmen, and friends and enemies of the family. Yet the key to the mystery has always been nearby: Min Gymsun, the widow of Lee Chholha, a steadfast woman who has kept his secret for decades. It is thanks to her that Margaret will finally be able to get answers to questions that have never let her go. What do the archived papers conceal? Why did her grandmother so carefully guard the family’s past? And is it possible to truly understand yourself without knowing the whole truth about those who gave you life?
