Northern Rus’, 963. Uleb, the half-brother of Prince Sviatoslav, is found murdered on the banks of the Volkhov, and no one knows what happened. That same night seven of Sviatoslav’s retainers—the gridi who grew up with him—disappear. Ber, Uleb’s cousin, takes up the duty of revenge and sets out to search for the alleged murderers. Accompanying him is a young widow of Uleb, Pravena—the only one in these lands who knows them by face.
At first, Ber thinks he will have to seek revenge against Sviatoslav’s will, since the bond of the дружина (warrior brotherhood) is dearer to him than blood kinship.
