The characters in this book are Anna Akhmatova, Joseph Brodsky, and Alexei Batalov, whom the author met at the legendary apartment on Ordynka, home of Viktor Ardov. Yuri Olesha and other residents of the writers' building on Lavrushinsky Lane. Oleg Yefremov, with whom the author was closely acquainted from the distant days when he studied at the Moscow Art Theatre School-Studio. The action also takes place in the famous dacha settlement of Peredelkino (hence the title, The Winter Dacha). The abundance of illustrious figures, about whom much has already been written, may put the experienced reader on guard: is the author merely following in the wake of others? No, he is not one of those who attach themselves to the trailblazers of a subject. The charm of this memoir prose lies precisely in the fact that there is nothing borrowed in it. Everything is his own: the order of words, the powers of observation, and the natural, expressive intonation of a seasoned man who is not averse to self-irony and the bittersweet feeling that accompanies reaching the home stretch.
