Artyom Chernov gets stuck in the Kazakh steppe when the dead begin to rise. Together with Asem, a girl whose officer father is missing, he makes his way to the military base in the ghost city of Kurchatov. But even there there is no salvation: the dead are drawn to the south, the steppe wormwood—zhusan—somehow stops them, and the base commander keeps silent about what he knows.
