Eugène Sue — the French writer, known in Russia primarily as the author of novels “The Mysteries of Paris” and “Ahasuerus.” “Jean Cavalier” is considered the best of his historical novels. It is devoted to the uprising of the Camisards at the beginning of the 18th century—France’s last of the religious wars and the last attempt by the Huguenots to defend their rights.
Another story about how boundless vanity—without one’s own oil well—ruins not only the owner himself, but also those who, naively, find themselves nearby. And the very culprit will somehow get away from the tragedy...
The story itself is both interesting and instructive, especially considering that the plot, as they say, is “based on real events.” Jean Cavalier is not an invented character, but a real person who, in fact, lived at the stated coordinates—possessing considerable talents and a vile character, which nullified those talents.
Jean Cavalier (Cavalier, 1679—1740) — the main leader of the Camisards in the Cévennes War; son of a Languedoc peasant; lived in Geneva; returned to his homeland in 1702, when the uprising broke out in the Cévennes, and soon became the head of the Huguenots. He disciplined the disorderly crowds and led their actions against the royal troops with such skill and success that in 1704 Marshal Villars entered into negotiations with him. Convinced it was impossible to get help—perhaps also flattered by the honors granted to him—Cavalier laid down his arms on the condition of a certain religious tolerance. Louis XIV himself granted him the rank of colonel and allowed him to form a special regiment of royal service from the Camisards. Only a small part of his men followed him. The government’s suspicion and refusal to convert to Catholicism forced C. to flee to England; soon thereafter, in Spain, he commanded a regiment composed of the Camisards who had fled and distinguished himself in the battle of Almansa. Later he became a major general in English service and governor of the island of Jersey.
