In 1605, the Gunpowder Plot against the king and Parliament failed—and ever since, in the UK, November 5 is marked as Bonfire Night. In the city of Lewes, the celebration is especially grand, and that night they also honor the memory of seventeen Protestant martyrs burned in 1555–1557.
This year’s Bonfire Night in Lewes could have been a resounding success—if not for the corpse. Before the eyes of thousands marching with torches, a real human skull rolled out of the head of the burnt effigy of Donald Trump.
No one knows how the remains of a city council member ended up inside the effigy. Rumors spread through town. The main suspect, eager to clear his name, turns to a policewoman, Tess Fox, for help. She has a sister, Sarah Jacobs—an inveterate con artist endowed with the talent of uncovering crimes. This unusual duo already proved its worth in the novel “Ace, Lady, Death,” and now they face a new investigation.
