“Virt” is a science-fiction novel by British writer Jeff Noon, winner of the 1994 Arthur C. Clarke Prize.
The novel tells the story of Scribble and his crew, the “Secret Riders.”
The action takes place in an alternative version of Manchester, where society is formed by “virt”—a shared alternative reality accessible by using a hallucinogenic drug called “feathers.” In addition to people, shadow policemen roam the city streets, dog-men, virtual people, robodogs, and other such creatures.
During another trip into “virt,” the “Secret Riders” lost Scribble’s sister, Desdemona, there. She can be brought back only by getting into “meta-virt”—a “virt” located inside virtual reality, to which access is granted only to beings of the highest order who constantly live there.
