The iconic war novel by Viktor Platonovich Nekrasov, "In the Trenches of Stalingrad", was published in 1946 in the journal "Znamya". It was one of the first honest accounts of the war, written by a man who had personally taken part in the battles for Stalingrad as deputy commander of a sapper battalion. Viktor Nekrasov was wounded in the fighting for Mamayev Kurgan.
