“The Morning of a Landowner” is Leo Tolstoy’s autobiographical story about how the young prince Nekhlyudov leaves the university and moves to the countryside with the intention of easing life for his serfs. The futility of his efforts was explained most accurately by Turgenev I. S.: “...as long as the system of serfdom exists, it is impossible for the two sides to draw close and understand one another, despite the most selfless and honest readiness to come closer...”
