The quiet and peaceful life of the great detective Hercule Poirot in the village of King’s Abbot is suddenly disturbed by the murder of the well-known financier Roger Ackroyd, who lived next door. The number of potential murderers is roughly equal to the population of King’s Abbot. A series of deductions leads Poirot to think that what happened is connected with the recent suicide of a local woman, as well as with the death of her husband, which occurred a year before the events described.
