Description
In 1917, John Dos Passos volunteered for the front. During the First World War he was in Italy and France, and he also took part in the Spanish Civil War. His novel “Three Soldiers” is a story of love and friendship, fear and betrayal in wartime. The heroes of the novel are a musician, a farmer, and a lens salesman — people from different social strata, with different views and ideas, living in different parts of the country and united by the terrible routine of army life. Each of them, in one way or another, rebelled against his fate, against violent death, lawlessness, and humiliation, against the suppression of individual will by the mighty military machine. In their persons, an entire generation suffered. The tragic “I” that sounded from the pages of Dos Passos’s contemporaries turned, in the writer’s hands, into a tragic “we.”
