“She told me about dance halls. In our town there was also a dance hall—near the main street, where they flooded the rink in winter. You pay ten cents, then you go up onto the platform and dance, and people watch you, but it doesn’t matter. She prefers to pay for herself, not to owe anyone. But sometimes some guy gets there before her. Then he asks if she wants to dance, and the first thing she says to him is, ‘Do you know how? Can you dance?’ She asks right like that. The guy then looks all surprised and says, ‘Well, yeah—what else would I come here for?’ But usually it turns out that dancing for him means shuffling his feet in place and constantly rubbing her with his big hands. Sometimes she just breaks free, throws the guy off and dances alone—in fact, she likes dancing alone the most either way. And she dances all the way through the dance that was paid for. And if the ticket seller objects and wants her to pay for two, when only one person danced, she says that’s enough. When she dances alone, let them laugh at her—she doesn’t care.”
