Robert Ervin Howard (1906–1936) was an American writer, author of adventures and detective stories, as well as works in the fantasy and horror genres. The heroes of many of his novels, novellas, and stories moved onto the pages of comics and the screens of Hollywood films. Here you’ll find the legendary barbarian Conan, and the fearless boxer and sailor Steve Costigan, and the fighter against evil Solomon Kane, and the brutal detective Steve Harrison.
The proposed collection includes three novellas: “The Blood of the Gods,” “The Country of Knives,” and “Son of the White Wolf.” At the center of each is an American who is cast by fate into the Near East and becomes famous there under the name El Borak (“Quick”). He is a typical lone hero: he appears in the most unexpected places, saves ordinary people, deals with villains, topples the power of local despots, and changes the course of events. Everyone in the Near East knows him and fears him. The famous rubies of “The Blood of the Gods” draw the attention of several gangs of villains at once. In a lost secret city in the desert, inhabited by criminals, a man comes to power whose actions threaten the foundations of Western civilization. In Turkey, pagan rebels challenge the ruling regime. And everywhere, the unstoppable El Borak thwarts the plans of the villains.
