Description
Bulgakov is a great writer, born at the turn of the centuries and creating at the boundary of historical epochs. In his works, the deepest mysticism and the boldest invention intertwine so closely with real life that no fantasy seems impossible anymore. This is true for “Heart of a Dog” as well, where an unprecedented experiment of transplanting a pituitary gland from a dog to a human creates a new personality. But the stubborn nature of a tavern balalaika player—unfortunately, vile, insolent, ungrateful—suppresses the noble heart of the dog, and the professor has nothing left to do but perform the reverse transformation…

“— You would like to be dissatisfied that you were turned into a man? — he asked, narrowing his eyes. — Perhaps you would prefer to run around the garbage dumps again? To freeze in alleyways? Well, if I’d known…
— Must you keep bringing up the garbage dump—the garbage dump? I earned my piece of bread. And what would you say if I’d died under your knife, comrade?”
