Among the dead was Oke Stenström, one of Martin Beck’s colleagues. In 1971, for this novel, Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö received the “Edgar” award as best novel in the crime genre. In 1995, the novel took 2nd place in the category of “novels realistically depicting police work” from the list of “100 best crime novels” by the association “Detective Writers of America.” In 1973, the novel was adapted for film in the USA, with the setting moved from Sweden to San Francisco.
