A merchant, Amos Potapyich Semishkurov, suddenly found himself with three great joys at once: he received Stanislav on his neck—“for piety and for gilding the iconostasis,” he finished a new house and moved into it for the housewarming, taking over a large space “for himself” and furnishing it anew.
“Enough with eating cabbage soup with a bast shoe—one can expand a bit… Thank God, now there’ll be enough for our lifetime!” he said to his wife, and decided to celebrate all three joys with a grand banquet, timed for September 17th—his wife’s name day.
First of all, it was decided to treat the “right” people. The guests were chosen with discretion—“who was more presentable”—but since an invitation couldn’t be used to bypass close relatives and those from the gray merchant class, they were invited with a subtle prompting.
