Description
"The Chauffeurs, or the Orzher Gang" is a work by the French writer E. Berte (1815–1891), who authored numerous "penny dreadful" novels, historical and adventure feuilletons, and dramas. The novel was written in 1857. It tells of the adventures of a band of savage robbers in eighteenth-century France. The plot unfolds against the backdrop of tragic and vivid events of the Great French Revolution. At one time, the author was more popular than Dumas père. Berte worked across many genres, opening up new themes. His novel "Orangutan" appeared before E. Burroughs’ "Tarzan," and "The Coal Miners of Poligny" inspired E. Zola to write "Germinal." The author’s books were translated into many languages, including Russian. Other works by Berte include: "The Beast of Jevodan," "The Shaking Rock," "The Lost Valley," and "The Bird of the Desert."
