A collection of works, excerpts, and fairy tales performed by Maria Grigoryevna Petrova.
Maria Grigoryevna Petrova
Born in 1906 in Saint Petersburg into a working-class family of the Putilov (now Kirov) Plant. She studied at the Leningrad Theater Institute under the workshop of L. S. Vivyen. After graduation she worked at the Leningrad Theater for Young Audiences. At the same time she began collaborating with Leningrad Radio, taking part in children’s programs. On April 1, 1934 Maria Petrova was hired by Leningrad Radio, where she worked continuously for 56 years. During these years, she read tens of thousands of pages of literary works and performed hundreds of roles in radio plays.
As composer Sergei Banевich believes, “Maria Grigoryevna Petrova is an entire era in the life of the city. Her voice and intonations were like the call signs of Leningrad. Adults and children turned the radio up full blast, and families listened together to how she read. I’m sure her artistry and the strength of her impact on the listener—combined with the limitless authority she had earned back in the years of the war and the Siege of Leningrad—affected whole generations of our citizens. My peers and I literally grew up on broadcasts with Maria Grigoryevna; we learned her heroes, loved them, and grew up believing that truth, courage, and kindness are not only in books, but in life itself—and we became a little better.”
