Despite not the most cheerful conditions for writing, the American William Sydney Porter entered world literature history as a master of short stories distinguished by a steady fine humor and optimism. He formed as a writer in prison, where he ended up on charges of embezzlement. It was there that his well-known pen name was born—O. Henry. Perhaps it is precisely the qualities he set against harsh reality that still make him “souls of the same kind” with people of different cultures and generations.
