Alistair MacLean (1922–1987) was a British writer and screenwriter who created 28 dynamic novels and adventure stories. He gained worldwide fame: the total circulation of his books exceeded 150 million copies, and 18 films were made based on his works and plots. In 1983, the University of Glasgow awarded MacLean a doctorate in literature.

A former Royal Navy sailor, MacLean is especially convincing when he writes about the sea and the people who challenge it. The collection “The Desert Sea” summarizes his creative path and includes all of his stories on maritime themes, including those that were not published during the author’s lifetime.
