Writer Anne Vetemaa is known not only to Estonian readers, but also to Russians. Her great popularity came in 1962 with the novel “Monument,” for which Vetemaa was awarded the all-Union State Prize. Other works include: “Fatigue” (1967), “Requiem for a Mouth Organ” (1968), “Chinese Eggs” (1972). Although after the collapse of the USSR the readership of Vetemaa’s books fell somewhat, she continues to create new works. Her books are printed again in Russia. “The Alien” was first published in the journal “Zvezda.”
In theme, this book is close to fantasy; you can feel the influence of Camus’s “The Stranger.” At once it seems that Vetemaa wants to make a gloomy travesty of either the Gospel or folklore stories about the chosen hero. Her Alien appears foreign—also in the sense that he came to Earth as if from outside.
