Trying to leave behind the past woven from fears and things left unsaid, Katrain leaves her native village and goes to prosperous Delft. Her gift for painting helps her get a job at a porcelain factory. When deliveries of expensive Chinese porcelain suddenly stop, the factory owner decides on a bold adventure — to create products capable of outshining Eastern samples. Inspired by Dutch landscapes, Katrain invents a unique blue-on-blue painting style destined to make her famous far beyond the city.
But just as she finds a measure of calm, the trials hit again, and her feelings are torn between two brothers — the impulsive Mathias and the sensible Evert. Against the backdrop of narrow paved streets and quiet canals, in the era of Rembrandt and Vermeer, the story unfolds of a talented artist who loses and then finds her own voice again, learns to trust people, and creates a blue-and-white reality where a miracle becomes possible.
