The Suspicion

Bern prosecutor Hans Bärlach goes to the hospital to have surgery on his stomach. Recovering after a successful operation, he flips through a Life magazine and accidentally comes across an article about the SS doctor Dr. Nölle, who in the Stutthof concentration camp performed operations on people without anesthesia. His friend and doctor Samuel Hünigertobel suggests to Bärlach that Nölle and Dr. Emmberger—the head of a well-known clinic in Zurich—might be the same person. The commissioner, accustomed to trusting his own instincts, decides to test his hypothesis despite his health condition and the obvious risk to his life.
