Lord Peter Wimsey, well known to listeners from the radio plays "Whose Body?" and "Strong Poison," this time has to investigate a mysterious incident in a rural parish church—while also trying his hand as a bell-ringer and learning from the inside about the life of small Anglican parishes. It is this case that presents him with the most difficult puzzle of his entire career, and at one point Wimsey even considers admitting defeat and abandoning the investigation. In the end, however, he will of course succeed in figuring out what kind of mysterious corpse was found in the bell tower and why this man met his death.
