“Sasha lives at the edge of a mining town and patches her own home herself. Her mother is already gone, and her father—an alcoholic—throws himself at every skirt, ignoring mourning. Sasha has no time to search for herself—she takes the job that’s available around here. Sasha loses people and everything that was valuable—and at the same time the huge USSR is losing itself.
The miners go on strike, promising to block the railway. Clever swindlers profit off the trusting villagers. While a new country is being built on the ruins of past greatness, Sasha tries to cope with poverty and hopelessness in the former miners’ settlement.
