In 1921, an inexperienced, not yet settled young taiga commune reaches out in friendship to the Khants who are being oppressed and robbed by a merchant, Porfiry Isaev. In this struggle, the commune’s chairman, the Bolshevik partisan Roman Bastrykov, is killed. In his place comes his son Alyoshka, raised by the old Bolshevik Tikhon Ivanovich Skobeeyev. Becoming a Komsomol member, Alyoshka continues his father’s fight for the restructuring of a vast country.
