English writer Richard Austin Freeman was born in London, graduated from medical college, worked as a surgeon in the British colony of the Gold Coast (Africa), and took part in expeditions to Ashanti and Bontuku. After suffering a serious injury, he returned to England and served as a prison doctor. He began publishing in 1898. His profession as a physician and natural scientist found its reflection in the plots of a number of books and in his choice of a recurring hero โ Dr. Thorndyke.
