Retired physics teacher Ivan Yakovlevich Brekht dies in our time and is transported into the body of a young man from a German village near Omsk. On the calendar it is 1932—and that’s when the famine in the USSR begins. Together with the protagonist’s relatives, he decides to leave home and move to the Far East, where railroad workers are needed for the CER (Chinese Eastern Railway).

A puppet of Japan, Manchukuo, is constantly provoking along the railway, forcing the USSR to sell the line as cheaply as possible.
