In the distant future, the former Admiral of the Space Fleet of the Russian Empire, Sergey Tikhonov, faces the threat of being destroyed after a change in power, because he possesses secret information about influential people. However, his long-hidden secret—kept for more than a hundred years—gives him a unique chance to survive. Back in his youth, on an unknown planet, he obtained a secret device that transfers his consciousness (and the device itself) over enormous distances—to a world analogous to our Earth, where the steam age reigns—1850. Recreating himself in the body of a twenty-year-old Yuri Davydov, a student and the son of a wealthy industrialist who was murdered on contract, the admiral adapts to local life and strives to prevent the defeat of the Russian Empire in the Crimean War.
