«Over the Cuckoo’s Nest» is a harsh and devastatingly honest portrayal of the boundary between sanity and madness.
Like many loud events associated with the name of the “mischievous prankster” Ken Kesey, the release in 1962 of his first book, «Over the Cuckoo’s Nest», made a lot of noise in America’s literary life. After its publication, Kesey was recognized as a remarkably talented writer, and the novel itself became one of the defining works of the Beatnik and hippie movements.
The debut, written at the age of 27, came at a time when the author was involved in psychological state experiments to alter human consciousness. The novel was one of the required homework assignments in literature courses at Stanford University.
In 1963, a theatrical production was staged; in 1975, Milos Forman filmed an adaptation of the same name, conquering the world and winning five Oscars, and many plays were also produced in different countries, including Russia.
The film won 5 Oscars, as well as 11 nominations and 28 other awards.
