Year 866. Northern England. At the gallows in a small village stands a young man of Danish-Saxon origin with a noose around his neck. But the sentence is never carried out. The village is awaiting a tragic fate, because right nearby a ship of Vikings is landing, and all the villagers will face—sometimes quickly, and sometimes мучительно—death. Not including the condemned man: his attackers set him free, call him Rolf, and he becomes their guide through the lands around—since he hates the local people even more than anyone else.
Warriors from the north came here not to plunder and not to fight. They came to take revenge, and they won’t leave just like that. Their mission grows into a full-scale invasion, but Rolf himself has plenty of secrets he wouldn’t want to share with his new allies. Only maybe the warriors’ revenge is aimed at the wrong targets—and to find the true culprits behind the massacre, you’ll need more than strength: you’ll need intellect and cunning.
