What a wonderful land, Malorossiya!..
A wisp of smoke rises from the cottage—his wife has prepared fragrant varenyky for her husband, borscht with pampushky, and fried goose. In the forest lives a little fox-sister, who outwitted all the other animals. The land is protected by brave bogatyrs, and on the stove lies a lazy fool, in love with the beautiful young lady.
In this book, you’ll meet familiar folklore plots seasoned with Ukrainian flair: the Rooster—Golden Comb, the she-goat-dereza, the Frog Princess, the ship-airplane, the magic satchel, and the Golden Little Clogs (a variation of the Cinderella tale).
The tales were collected, translated, and adapted by Klavdiya Lukashevich (1859—1931)—a popular children’s writer of pre-revolutionary Russia, who worked using materials from collections by A. S. Afanasyev, G. P. Danilevsky, I. Ya. Rudchenko, P. P. Chubinsky, and Uncle Puf.
