This is Japrisot's first detective novel, published in 1962. It already displayed all the distinctiveness of the master of French detective fiction's creative style, characterized by a striving to go beyond the "canons" of the genre. Having begun the novel with a classic detective opening — a young woman's corpse is found in a train compartment arriving from Marseille to Paris — the author "entrusts" the solving of the crime to a chance fellow traveler of the victim, a young man who has run away from home and is wanted by the police.
