The events of the book take place from May to September 2001. Odysseus (with the help of a vast network of agents of Directorate N in Europe) escapes from a Hungarian prison, and through a series of clever tricks ends up in Belarus (the way to cross the border is from the author’s personal experience). There, he is caught by a directive from his superiors—to look into the mysterious death of a Ukrainian customs officer (and at the same time an agent of Directorate N) Aleksandr Drobotey, who died on the Ukrainian-Polish border near Lviv. The investigation carried out by Odysseus reveals a grand provocation planned against Russia by Western special services, accusing it of supplying Iran with nuclear weapons. In the end, the provocation fails, and on September 11, 2001, Odysseus travels to Berlin to pick up Gerda and their son.
