After her parents’ divorce, seventeen-year-old Estela leaves Madrid and moves to Castilmo—a town where whispers about witches still linger, witches who were once burned at the stake. At her new school, she immediately comes to the attention of the Palacio brothers: one treats her with warmth, while the other dislikes her from the very first minute. Soon, Estela begins to be stalked by inexplicable things—heavy nightmares and crows, as if watching her every step. When one of the students disappears without a trace, rumors spread through the town: Brooks took her—an old witch from local legends who has returned in the form of a bird-vampire. Estela dismisses superstition until she stumbles in the woods upon traces of blood and enormous black feathers… But the nightmare only grows stronger: a mark of a Spanish playing-card suit appears on her body. And then Estela realizes—legends have come to life. She’s been pulled into a dangerous game where the price is far too high, and her own life is on the line.
