«Cannibals» is a tense urban noir set against the backdrop of masterfully crafted sets from the Bolshoi Ballet. The fate of an unremarkable “stray” somehow becomes entwined with plots of geopolitical intrigue and major criminal schemes to smuggle art treasures under the cover of touring ballet props.
A family drama at its core—of course, driven by jealousy—blows up an already shaky, though still functioning, corruption-ridden system of officials. Like a house of cards, the system collapses and fractures human lives: here is the prima ballerina enduring a transition from Saint Petersburg to Moscow; and a journalist who finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time; and a security guard—a former “cop,” now the right-hand man of a prime minister-to-be; and the official’s family, with ordinary and extraordinary skeletons in the closet and ghosts of the past…
