Romeo and Juliet are teenage lovers who, over time, turned into the most “marketable” couple in the world’s culture. We keep believing in their feeling not because it’s documented, but because we want this kind of love to exist. However, the real background to the plot isn’t a single fact from the past, but a complex fabric woven from ancient motifs, medieval feuds, and Renaissance novellas. And this is a story not so much about romance as about how humanity learned to package tragedies into a recognizable brand: Shakespeare wrote a play about the death of young lovers, and subsequent eras turned it into a beautiful legend. Was Shakespeare a plagiarist? Who first laid out the story of Romeo and Juliet as a poem? Why did the plague epidemic become a key mechanism of the plot? Did the story have real prototypes?
