Description
"Once they gathered together kuralesov, ghushcheevs and other tribes of mischief, and the headstrong fellows started settling down inside, with the obvious purpose of achieving some order… It began with the fact that they mixed the Volga with porridge, then dragged a calf to a bath, then cooked porridge in a basket, then drowned a goat in fermented dough… and finally got tired and began to wait and see what would come of it."

The story of a city called “Dumb” is a brilliant parody of the history of the Russian state and of the “national character of its citizens”; at the time the author wrote it, he had already been to exile for “harmful ways of thinking.” The novel, considered one of Saltykov-Shchedrin’s creative peaks, and his most famous “Tales” are performed by USSR People’s Artist Mikhail Ulyanov.
