The book by the outstanding theosophist A. Besant is devoted to the emergence and development of consciousness. It examines in detail field processes, the mechanisms of consciousness, the appearance and work of monads, the essence of memory and desire, the birth of Emotion and how to govern it, and the role of willful factors.
โIn this book, addressed to people studying the problem of the evolution of consciousness, I present hypotheses and assumptions which may prove useful to them. It does not claim to be complete, but is rather a contribution to psychology. For the full account of the vast science that deals with the unfoldment of consciousness, far more material is required than what is at my disposal. The necessary material is gradually accumulating in the hands of diligent and hardworking scholars, but so far no effort has been made to systematize it and put it in order. In this small work I have systematized only a small part of that material, in the hope that now it may be useful for some workers in the broad field of the Evolution of Consciousness and may serve in the future as one brick in the complete structure. A great architect will be needed to plan this temple of knowledge, and a skillful mason to guide its construction; for now, it is enough to do the work of an apprentice and prepare building materials for more skilled masters.โ
