Description
Spoken language is a living phenomenon in which many components come together and interact in a unique, one-of-a-kind way. Living speech is everyone’s personal experience, a high art that embodies a person and their life. How should we approach the enormous flow of changes in the Russian language and Russian pronunciation? How do words function today? What additional burden do they carry in conditions of endless freedom and the right to be whoever you want to be? How have the internet and social media changed our understanding of public speech? And finally, do we need to master the art of speaking? Professor of Stage Speech at the MHAT School-Studio, Doctor of Arts Anna Nikolaevna Petrova answers all these questions and insists that грамотна and good speech in life—and especially in professional activity—has become more and more in demand, turning into a status category in recent years. No wonder many public figures—politicians, businessmen, journalists, teachers—consider it necessary to improve their speaking.
Good speech has always been an attribute of any educated person; it helps someone establish themselves in society, influence “the minds, passions, and will of other people,” get a prestigious job, and build a worthy circle of acquaintances. Is it easy or hard to master proper speech—can it even be done? With her book, Anna Nikolaevna answers unambiguously: yes, it’s possible. But you have to learn it. The book “The Art of Speech” is about Russian speech—its laws and rules. It is the result of the author’s many years of personal practice, observations, and research, as well as her acquaintance with the work of many different schools of teaching the art of live speech, and with the artistic experience of the Russian theater. The book collects and rethinks the laws and rules of speech, the methodological foundations of teaching the art of living speech: today’s reflections, new knowledge, past convincing and effective experience; errors and miscalculations in practice. In this regard, many materials from the author’s other works are compiled and republished again. A great place in the author’s work is given to questions of logic and intonation, setting the correct breathing, improving diction and pronunciation, and solving syntactic and stylistic problems. Anna Nikolaevna conducts work with words using the material of great literary works.
