Shurik—actually Alexander—tried to help everyone around him out of his genuine kindness (he was raised by women, and even though his grandmother was a battle-loving grandmother). Not just to help, but also—like a man—to comfort. So a whole collection gathered of women who needed comfort, from a grandmother over 50 (Shurik was 18) to a legless disabled woman. He tried to be everywhere, but the first on the list was, of course, his mother, whom he called Verochka.
