The World of Mist is small, but harsh. Some are convinced it’s a parallel world; others think they’re characters from a computer game; some vote for the “branch of hell”; and for a select few it’s merely an object called “Module-317.” No one really understands how people get here, and no one has managed to leave back into the big world. Life here survives only behind the protective perimeter, where the sun shines and you can breathe freely. Beyond the city, in the Mist, long stays are granted only to “mistwalkers”—but even they constantly risk becoming “lost ones,” falling to the claws of Mist creatures, or becoming victims of a confrontation between two human enclaves.
